SEASONS
Nicolai Copernicus (1473-1543) changed our understanding of astronomy when he proposed that the sun, not Earth, was the center of the solar system. This led to our modern understanding of the relationship between the sun and Earth.
We now know that Earth orbits the sun elliptically and at the same time, spins on an axis that is tilted. The tilting of the Earth as it spins causes the seasons to change. This means that different hemispheres are exposed to different amounts of sunlight throughout the year. When Earth's Northern Hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, there are fewer hours of daylight and the temperature is colder. When the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the sun, there is more daylight time and the temperatures are warmer because the sun is our source of light, energy and heat, the changing intensity and concentration of its rays give rise to the seasons of winter, spring, summer and fall. The seasons are a powerful force in our lives. They affect the activities we do, the foods we crave, the clothes we wear- and quite often, the moods we are in.
Summer is the warmest seasons of a year. It falls between the seasons of spring and autumn. Traditionally according to meteorology the Northern Hemisphere experiences summer for the entire months of June, July and August. For the Southern Hemisphere the summer months are December, January and February. It is a very good season for outdoor activities like vacationing, swimming or simply lazing on the beach. Various tropical fruits like pineapples, watermelons, mangoes, berries, melons, and vegetables are abundant in summer.
Spring falls between winter and summer. It rules over the months of March and April. In India, it is honoured as the King of the seasons. Spring is a beautiful season. It is a season bursting with flowers and new life. Many different kinds of flower bloom in spring.  Swarms of bees rush at them. Spring's gentle breeze, blooming flowers and green grass tell us it's time to go outdoors, breathe fresh air, and bask in warm sunshine.
Autumn brings lots of changes. The trees begin to change colors, bringing a beautiful array of different colored foliage, which eventually drops off into our yards. It also brings cooler temperatures, and, as it progresses, we begin to put away our summer cloths and we bring out our warm sweaters and heavy blankets.  As the frost bites at the apples on the trees they become sweet, crisp and juicy. The autumn leaves are as orange as a pumpkin. The weather is as crisp as fresh lettuce. The scarecrows blow in the wind like big rag dolls.
 During the winter months, temperatures are usually colder and there are fewer hours of daylight. The winter months in the Northern hemisphere are December, January, February, and sometimes even March. Animals have special ways of preparing themselves for winter. Some animals, like birds and butterflies travel long distances, or migrate, to warmer temperatures during the winter months. Other animals go to sleep, or hibernate, during the winter. Bears, gophers,  snakes, and bats hibernate. Squirrels and raccoons don't migrate or hibernate. Instead, they gather extra food during the fall months and store it away so they have plenty to eat during the long winter months. In some areas, winter is a time when snow falls and gathers on the ground. People who live in these places can enjoy special winter activities like skiing, sledding, or snowboarding. They can also build snowmen and snow castles. When the water in lakes and ponds freeze, people can ice skate or play ice hockey. Some people even cut a hole in the ice and go ice fishing!
